We met at a house party thrown by my cousin, Shelton Williams, during my first year back in college (starting over as a Freshman) while she was beginning her Senior year. I guess it was that Williams’ men charm that she couldn’t resist. As our relationship grew, it became apparent that we were destined to be together. We both had a lot in common, namely, both of our fathers’ nicknames were Bubba, both of our mothers’ middle names were Mae, we both had sisters named Christine, and I had a niece called Niecy, while my wife’s nickname is also Niecy. As our relationship deepened, our love for each other grew stronger. It became even more apparent that we were meant to be together. I finally asked her to marry me; she said yes, and we are still together after 44 years.
When we met, my wife was already the mother of our oldest son, Roscell, who became my son when I said “I Do” to his mother. Our father-son relationship grew and remains strong today. When we got married, we had no biological children together. I had two daughters from a previous relationship, and she had Roscell. However, her inner desire was always to have a family of four (2 boys and 2 girls). Our daughters are very dear to her as “Mom” and “Second Mom.” We made every effort to bring the children close.
The Bible says that God will give you the desires of your heart, and a family that prays together stays together. Just look at God, some years later, along comes Marcus, and that family she hoped for was complete. God had indeed blessed us with that family of four loving children. The birth of our son, Marcus, occurred during one of the coldest weeks on record for the city of Dothan, AL. The morning he was born, the temperature was four (4) degrees. He was a special child. The nurses couldn’t even change shifts due to the weather.
The purchase of our first house was another memorable event in our lives. You don’t realize how much stuff you have in a mobile home until you start packing to move to a new house.
Our first cruise to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary was a week-long Eastern Caribbean cruise aboard a beautiful two-year-old Royal Caribbean ship. It took a little convincing to get her on the ship when we arrived at the port of call, but everything went well after we finally boarded. What a coincidence: one of the other two couples sharing our dinner table for the week was a Scottish couple celebrating the same wedding date as us (July 7th). Boy, did we enjoy that cruise. What happens on the ship stays on the ship.
Our anniversary trip to Myrtle Beach, SC, to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary was another memorable event. I really enjoyed the in-room jacuzzi. I had to teach my wife that you don’t make a tossed salad at a $30.00 per person all-you-can-eat seafood restaurant.
Our anniversary trip to Jekyll Island, GA, to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary was another memorable event. The carriage ride around the island was great.
Our 40th anniversary added a new twist. We added an additional occasion to celebrate as we marked 40/65 (40 years of marriage and both of us turning 65). We enjoyed another week-long Eastern Caribbean cruise on another beautiful Royal Caribbean ship. This time we had four more family couples tag along, including our youngest son Marcus and his wife Andrea, who served as our personal drivers and tour guides. They also celebrated their 8th wedding anniversary while onboard.
